I’m sorry to be sharing very frightening news from Gaza but I know you care about us and what we are facing in this pandemic.
There are now 55 known cases of coronavirus in Gaza and a few hours ago a Palestinian woman died, the first coronavirus death in Gaza. I know that these numbers seem low compared to what you’re seeing in the U.S. and other parts of the world. I also know you understand how fast the numbers can grow. These new numbers mean that the virus has probably spread to the general population and it is no longer affecting just a few quarantined people who recently returned to Gaza.
The World Health Organization (WHO) says an outbreak is just a matter of time.
As you know, thirteen years of the Israeli siege has devastated the health system and economy in every way:
- There is a great deficit of basic medicine for different diseases, let alone the shortage of laboratories supplies and the lack of electricity for most of the day and night.
- Self-isolation and hygiene measures are very hard to follow in crowded refugee camps and poor city communities.
- The Israeli military continues its attacks against farmers and fishermen who must leave their homes to provide food for their families and communities.
- The Ministry of Health has closed 17 of its 52 primary health clinic in rural areas.
MECA, together with other organizations in Gaza has an emergency plan to provide people with food, hygiene kits (hand sanitizer, alcohol, etc.), accurate prevention information, and health care.
Your contribution now will make it possible for MECA to do all we can to meet people’s needs at this terrifying moment. Please stand with the people of Gaza again by donating now.
In Gaza your solidarity and friendship mean to much. We are thinking of you too and we hope that you and your family are healthy and safe. We also understand that you may also be facing economic hardship. If you can’t give $25 like you have before, please know that anything you can give now will ease our suffering.
From Gaza with love,
Dr. Mona El-Farra
MECA Gaza Director
