Oakland Museum of Children’s Art Shuts Down Palestinian Children’s Exhibit

Berkeley, CA— The Museum of Children’s Art in Oakland (MOCHA) has decided to cancel an exhibit of art by Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip. The Middle East Children’s Alliance (MECA), which was partnering with MOCHA to present the exhibit, was informed of the decision by the Museum’s board president on Thursday, September 8, 2011. For several months, MECA and the museum had been working together on the exhibit, which is titled “A Child’s View From Gaza.”

US Artists in Gaza Over Water Crisis

A delegation of US artists from several American organizations are in Gaza to bring worldwide attention to the water crisis in the besieged territory, the artists said they came to help local community paint murals about drinking, a basic human right. The initiative will create a series of 10 collaborative mural projects in 10 cities across the globe in areas impacted by water rights issues.

We received these beautiful images from Susan Greeene of Break the Silence Mural and Arts Project. Susan and a delegation of US artists accompanied Barbara and I on a visit to Silwan last week. We were treated to a delicious homecooked meal, a briefing of the situation for Palestinian residents of Silwan, a quick tour of the neighborhood, and a music recital by children from Madaa Center!

Children pay ultimate price of Iraq’s poisonous wartime legacy

The Middle East Children's Alliance has been sending life-saving aid to hospitals and clinics in Iraq since 1991. Our efforts are just a small drop in the bucket considering the enormous need that is described in the following article. But aid is one way of showing concrete solidarity with the Iraqi families suffering under US and UN wars, sanctions, and occupation. We are planning another shipment of medicine for Spring 2012.

This inspiring new project expands on our long partnership with Break the Silence Mural and Arts Project and we are looking forward to using art as a tool for educating people about the water crisis in Palestine and building connections between communities.
