Bay Area documentary photographer Najib Joe Hakim’s beautiful and compelling multimedia storytelling project “Home Away from Home: Little Palestine by the Bay” is on display at the Alameda Free Library. The exhibit combines black-and-white portraits of 26 members of the Bay Area Palestinian community—the second-largest in the United States—with recorded interviews with them about home, identity, and the complexities of living with hopes for Palestine in a country often hostile to those aspirations. Viewers with smart phones can scan QR codes next to the portraits to listen to interviews in the subjects’ own voices. Written transcripts are also provided.
The exhibit will be displayed throughout the first and second floors until March 11.
Cosponsored by Friends of Wadi Foquin and the Arab Cultural and Community Center, San Francisco.
