MECA’s March 28th Tribute to former Berkeley mayor GUS NEWPORT – who was also President of MECA’s Board for 30 years – was a huge success! Over 400 folks attended, mostly in person at the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley, while others tuned in virtually.
The lobby was packed with folks so happy to see Gus: former staffers, political colleagues, many long-time Berkeley activists, along with his family—and it was a treat to enjoy delicious Palestinian food from Zaytoun Restaurant.
Gus’ longtime pal Danny Glover MC’d the event; Danny had just received an Honorary Oscar for his activism the night before in LA! We heard beautiful tributes to Gus about his extraordinary accomplishments from Angela Davis, Bernie Sanders, and Holly Near — as well as from his son Kyle and daughter Maria, MECA director Zeiad Abbas, Rev. Dr. Dorsey Blake, Damien Durr, MECA Board Chair Michel Shehadeh, Larry Shapiro, and MECA co-founder Barbara Lubin.
Plus Aswat performed Palestinian music, and Gus’ former staffer Mark Allen presented a Resolution honoring Gus from California state senator Nancy Skinner. The finale was Gus himself , who held us all spellbound with his characteristic eloquence and passion for radical social change.
