This July, Barbara Lubin, Dr. Mona El Farra and I returned to the Rachel Corrie Children’s Center in Rafah, a center MECA has supported since its construction in 2003.  We met with the center’s Director, Anees Mansoor, the most inspiring of young men working under the most difficult of situations.

During our visit, MECA pledged to continue its direct support for the Rachel Corrie Center, where children come to play but can also learn about the life and sacrifice of a young woman who is and will continue to be an example, a challenge, and a voice that once said, “Sometimes I sit down to dinner with people and I realize there is a massive military machine surrounding us, trying to kill the people I'm having dinner with.”

Barbara Lubin, after hearing about the verdict, said, “We are saddened but not surprised by the Israeli Court's ruling about the death of Rachel Corrie.  Our hearts go out to her family and friends.  Once again the State of Israel refuses to take responsibility for it's murderous actions.  The killing of a young, peace loving activist from Olympia Washington whose only desire was to stop the demolition of a home that belonged to a family in Gaza that she considered her extended family.  Rachel Corrie was and continues to be a hero and an example for young and old people around the world.”

On a day like today, we need to listen again to the words that hang in the air like olives that have yet to be harvested.  Rachel Corrie, in a speech she gave in the 5th grade said “….. We have got to understand that the poor are all around us, and we’re ignoring them.  We have got to understand these deaths are preventable.”  Her own death was preventable, a murderous act that happened while she was protecting the rights of  Palestinian families whose homes were being demolished by Israeli bulldozers.

No courtroom in the world can change her legacy. How dare they. It is now up to all of us to stand with the Corrie family and listen to their response to this verdict. MECA, thanks to the support of so many of you, will amplify her legacy through the Children’s Center in Gaza, where the children Rachel loved so much come to play.  Some of them are even named after her.
