Today is the 17th anniversary of the killing of Rachel Corrie. Rachel is an iconic figure of solidarity with the Palestinian people during our struggle against the Israeli occupation.

I went to Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip today to pay respect to the martyr of solidarity at the same site where Rachel was killed by an Israeli caterpillar bulldozer while she was trying to defend Palestinian homes in Rafah and to protect Palestinian children.

It was a small gathering since emergency measures are in place in Gaza to prevent the coronavirus but I was with friends and colleagues Essa Saba, Hashem Talatini, and Iad Abu Loly, director of the Rachel Corrie Children’s Center in Rafah. A group of Palestinian children joined our visit to the site where we put flowers and remembered Rachel’s life and legacy.

From Gaza with love,

Dr. Mona El-Farra
