Join us! \n \nILAN PAPPE\, Ph.D.\, directs the European Center of Palestine Studies at the University of Exeter in the U.K. He is an Israeli historian and activist\, the son of German Jewish parents who fled Nazi persecution in the 1930s. Pappe has published 15 books\, including the groundbreaking The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (2006)\, which debunks the myth that the Palestinian population left of their own accord. He documents that part of Israel’s founding ideology was the forcible removal of the indigenous population: between 1947- 1949\, over 400 Palestinian villages were destroyed\, civilians were massacred\, and approximately one million men\, women\, and children were expelled from their homes at gunpoint. Called “Israel’s bravest historian” by journalist John Pilger\, Pappe left Israel in 2008 after finding it it “increasingly difficult” to live there with his “unwelcome views and convictions\,” including his support of economic\, political and academic boycotts of Israel. \nDIANA BUTTU is a Canadian-Palestinian human rights attorney. In 2000\, she moved to the occupied West Bank where she served as a legal advisor to the Palestinian negotiating team and later to the Palestinian president. She was part of the team that assisted in the successful litigation of the Wall before the International Court of Justice. Buttu resigned from her post in 2005 but remains a frequent commentator on Middle East politics and human rights\, with op-eds and appearances in media outlets such as the NYT\, CNN\, BBC\, Aljazeera\, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post. Buttu is the recipient of the Stelle Solidariete Italian prize for her human rights work; she was the Eleanor Roosevelt Fellow at Harvard Law School\, holding an appointment with the Kennedy School and Law School at the same time. Angela Davis has been an activist and liberatory scholar since the 1960s. Her 2003 book Are Prisons Obsolete? laid the strategic groundwork for the current abolition movement\, as did the first Critical Resistance Conference\, which she co-organized in 1998. \nShe will be joined\, from Palestine\, by Jamal Juma’\, a leading grassroots organizer since Palestine’s First Intifada in 1987. A founding member of the Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committees\, Palestine National BDS Committee\, Palestinian Association for Cultural Exchange\, and Palestinian Environmental NGO Network\, Juma’ is coordinator of the Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign and Stop the Wall. \nKristian Davis Bailey\, who will be moderating their conversation\, is a co-founder of Black for Palestine and a co-author of the 2015 Black Solidarity with Palestine Statement signed by more than 1\,000 Black activists. DESCRIPTION:Cairo Cabaret:\nCelebrating Live Arabic Music and Improvisational Dance\nin the Heart of San Francisco\nFacebook event \nMany thanks to the artists for making the December Cairo Cabaret a benefit for MECA! \nImprovisational dance to live Arabic music is an integral part of any Middle Eastern arts and cultures. Unfortunately\, this is a dying art. The mission of Cairo Cabaret is to keep alive and celebrate these unique and vanishing art forms by supporting events that include live Arabic music and improvisational dance\, educating audiences of the beauty of these cultural experiences\, and deepening ones connection with these rare art forms. In a climate of intolerance and division\, Cairo Cabaret shine a light on artists promoting Middle Eastern cultures by showcasing live Arabic music and dance performances. \nCairo Cabaret features dancers who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of Middle Eastern dances and cultures. These dancers are from the Salimpour School of Dance which teaches numerous forms of Middle Eastern dances and emphasizes technique\, musicality\, and a deep cultural study. Arabic music will be performed by the Georges Lammam Ensemble which has long-standing history of performing classical Arabic music in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Middle East. \n

Her research interests include humanitarian law\, refugee law\, national security law\, and critical race theory. Noura is the author of Justice for Some: Law As Politics in the Question of Palestine (Stanford University Press\, 2019). She is a Co-Founding Editor of Jadaliyya e-zine and an Editorial Committee member of the Journal of Palestine Studies. She has served as Legal Counsel for a Congressional Subcommittee in the House of Representatives\, as a Legal Advocate for the Badil Resource Center for Palestinian Refugee and Residency Rights\, and as the national grassroots organizer at the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation. Noura is the coeditor of Aborted State? The UN Initiative and New Palestinian Junctures\, an anthology related to the 2011 and 2012 Palestine bids for statehood at the UN. More recently\, Noura released a project on the Gaza Strip and Palestine\, which includes a short multimedia documentary\, “Gaza In Context\,” that rehabilitates Israel’s wars on Gaza within a settler-colonial framework.
