The vivid translations by Fady Joudah will jostle readers into discomfort and pin Al-Hayyat’s stunning voice into their ears.”—Booklist \n“Abu Al-Hayyat explores the broader political and geographic aspects of Palestinian life under colonial rule while at the same time interweaving the quotidian aspects of life and loss in such settings. Within these frictions of exterior trauma and private contemplations\, large constraints and small freedoms\, these poems soar.”—Chicago Review of Books \nBuy a copy of “You Can Be the Last Leaf” from MECA’s online store! \nTickets $10\, Benefit for the Palestine Writing Workshop\nRegister now! www.mecaforpeace.org/lastleaf\nFor info: meca@mecaforpeace.org\, 510-548-0542 \nCosponsored by SacramentoBethlehem Sister City

SUMMARY:Palestinians Fight For Their Village: Virtual Brunch in Solidarity with Silwan
DESCRIPTION:Last summer\, Palestinians and pro-Palestinian activists worldwide rose up to defend Silwan and other villages in East Jerusalem from Israeli bulldozers. Silwan is out of the headlines\, but the battle rages on! \nSilwan is an example of creative resistance to Israeli efforts to destroy all Palestinian presence in the villages surrounding Jerusalem’s Old City. The community\, while struggling with the impact of the Covid pandemic\, faces the constant arrests of Silwani children\, house thefts and demolitions\, the imminent destruction of whole neighborhoods—and the use of the City of David National Park as an archeological weapon for conquest. \nJawad Siyam\, founder of the Wadi Hilweh Information Center and Madaa Creative Center for Children\, has been at the center of Silwani resistance. We’re honored to be able to share his perspective and news about the current situation. \nJody Sokolower\, co-coordinator of MECA’s Teach Palestine Project\, is the author of Determined to Stay: Palestinian Youth Fight for Their Village. Determined to Stay is filled with voices of Silwani youth and their families that illuminate the connections between Israeli’s role in Palestine and racism faced by youth in the United States. Jody will share some of those stories and discuss ways her book can be a tool for building understanding and solidarity. \nSilwani community leader Jawad Siyam on how the village is fighting current attacks from Israeli forces and settlers. \nJody Sokolower shares the stories\, fears and dreams of Silwani youth from her book Determined to Stay: Palestinian Youth Fight for Their Village. \nCome join us to learn more about Silwan and how you can stand in solidarity! \n

As a small child\, I looked up at my mother and clutched her hand. The puffiness of her palm reminded me of a loaf of warm pita bread\, and when she laced her fingers into mine like a pretzel\, I felt safe. I would have walked with her to the ends of the earth.” \nFrom Goodreads Reviewers:\n“A beautifully written story told with honesty and passion…It will jerk those tears right out of your head…Surely one of the best books of 2021.” \n“Informative\, powerful\, moving…Her descriptions of the places she visits in Palestine are exceptionally evocative…I felt transported to the streets of Jerusalem and Ramallah\, almost as if I was walking alongside her…[She] summarizes the outcome of her journey: ‘Unbeknownst to me\, in the process of recovering from my mother her beloved past\, I had found it for myself.'”

SUMMARY:San Francisco Protest for Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Saturday May 15th in San Francisco \n2pm: PROTEST at 16th & Valencia \nFB event Page – please share! \nAs we approach the anniversary of the Nakba\, the colonization of Palestine and forced expulsion of Palestinians continues. Though this is apparent across Palestine\, it is most clear in the heart of Jerusalem\, Palestine’s capitol: in the village of Sheikh Jarrah\, in Silwan\, in Batan Al Hawa\, where Palestinian families are being threatened with imminent expulsion from their homes by the Israeli regime\, Zionist militias and its colonial settlers. \nIn addition to showing up to the streets to uplift the demands of our families back home\, this year we want to also acknowledge the housing evictions and ongoing gentrification of San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood\, where we are holding our rally this year. The Mission has forever been a pillar for Palestinian migrants and especially among the immigrant and black and latinx communities. A place of robust and rich history\, culture\, and connections\, it does not go unnoticed that black and brown communities and the poor are constantly pushed out of their homes to make way for big profit and expansion. We ask our siblings to join us in the streets as we defend our homeland in Palestine and join together in the streets of San Francisco. \nAs we mark 73 years of Nakba\, we also celebrate 73 years of international resistance and struggle for liberation. \nWe are following Covid precautions with an emphasis on social distancing and masks. Sanitizer and extra masks will be available\, so please come join us and help one another stay safe! \nOrganized by the San Francisco Bay Area Palestine Action Network (AROC\, PYM\, Al-Awda\, USPCN\, GUPS\, JVP\, IJAN\, MECA\, ANSWER\, NorCal Friends of Sabeel\, QUIT\, WWP). Endorsed by the Northern California Islamic Council\, and the ICNA Council for Social Justice.

SUMMARY:Virtual Screening "This is Not a Movie: Robert Fisk and the Politics of Truth"
DESCRIPTION:A special tribute screening to the late Robert Fisk\, hosted by the Middle East Children’s Alliance and the Arab Film & Media Institute. Robert Fisk died on October 30\, 2020\, in Ireland at the age of 74. \nFollowed by a Q & A with filmmaker Yung Chang! \nMore info: This is Not a Movie: Robert Fisk and the Politics of Truth | Arab Cinema ReImagined \n \nNOTE: After this content becomes available January 13th at 5:00 pm PST\, you’ll have 4 days 6 hours to start watching. Once you begin\, you’ll have 24 hours to finish watching the film. The January 13th at 5:00 pm live stream can be viewed anytime until January 17th at 11:45 pm. \n? \nABOUT THE FILM:\nFor more than 40 years\, journalist Robert Fisk has reported on some of the most violent and divisive conflicts in the world. \nYung Chang’s This Is Not a Movie captures Fisk in action—feet on the ground\, notebook in hand\, as he travels into landscapes devastated by war\, ferreting out the facts and firing reports back home to reach an audience of millions. \n“Chang uses Fisk to weave a tale about the nature of modern journalism.”\n–Cineuropa \n“In response to the idea that journalism is or should be ‘objective\,’ Fisk said\, “I always say that reporters should be neutral and unbiased on the side of those who suffer. If you were covering the 18th-century slave trade\, you would not give equal space to the slave-ship captain. … At the Sabra and Shatila massacre in Beirut in 1982\, I did not give equal time to the Israeli army who watched the killings and whose Lebanese allies committed the atrocity.” \n***Apologies\, but this showing is only authorized to be viewed in the USA.*** \n\nFacebook event\nAnd to whet your appetite\, check out this conversation between Robert Fisk and filmmaker Yung Chang\, about the role of journalism\, from the Toronto International Film Festival\, September 2019. \nCosponsored by Norcal Friends of Sabeel and Jewish Voice for Peace- Bay Area

SUMMARY:Webinar: Ilan Pappe & Diana Buttu
DESCRIPTION:What Next for Palestine?\nJoin MECA for this special live webinar!\nSign up now www.mecaforpeace.org/pappe\nBy November 22\, who knows what will be happening in the world — given the US elections\, Covid\, upheaval and uprisings worldwide. Don’t miss this chance to hear from two brilliant and compelling activist/scholars about the effects on Palestine and what we can do. Join us! \n \nILAN PAPPE\, Ph.D.\, directs the European Center of Palestine Studies at the University of Exeter in the U.K. He is an Israeli historian and activist\, the son of German Jewish parents who fled Nazi persecution in the 1930s. Pappe has published 15 books\, including the groundbreaking The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (2006)\, which debunks the myth that the Palestinian population left of their own accord. He documents that part of Israel’s founding ideology was the forcible removal of the indigenous population: between 1947- 1949\, over 400 Palestinian villages were destroyed\, civilians were massacred\, and approximately one million men\, women\, and children were expelled from their homes at gunpoint. Called “Israel’s bravest historian” by journalist John Pilger\, Pappe left Israel in 2008 after finding it it “increasingly difficult” to live there with his “unwelcome views and convictions\,” including his support of economic\, political and academic boycotts of Israel. \nDIANA BUTTU is a Canadian-Palestinian human rights attorney. In 2000\, she moved to the occupied West Bank where she served as a legal advisor to the Palestinian negotiating team and later to the Palestinian president. She was part of the team that assisted in the successful litigation of the Wall before the International Court of Justice. Buttu resigned from her post in 2005 but remains a frequent commentator on Middle East politics and human rights\, with op-eds and appearances in media outlets such as the NYT\, CNN\, BBC\, Aljazeera\, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post. Buttu is the recipient of the Stelle Solidariete Italian prize for her human rights work; she was the Eleanor Roosevelt Fellow at Harvard Law School\, holding an appointment with the Kennedy School and Law School at the same time. In a 2018 opinion piece in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz\, Buttu stated\, “It is repugnant that the world demands that Palestinians negotiate their freedom\, while Israel continues to steal Palestinian land.” \nSpace Limited\, REGISTER NOW! $10 suggested donation\nwww.mecaforpeace.org/pappe \nFacebook event – please share! \nBenefit for Palestine & Lebanon \nCosponsored by Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC)\, NorCal Friends of Sabeel\, Jewish Voice for Peace – Bay Area and more!
