Determined to Stay is the moving story of its people in the face of occupation. As Silwani youth and community members share their lives with us\, their village becomes a doorway to Palestinian history and current reality. Written with young people in mind\, Determined to Stay draws deep connections between the lives of youth in the US and Palestine—from criminalization\, forced relocation and buried histories to hip-hop as resistance. \nJody Sokolower is co-coordinator of the Teach Palestine Project at the Middle East Children’s Alliance. Formerly managing editor of Rethinking Schools\, Jody is a teacher educator who has taught middle and high school social studies and English. She was lead editor of Rethinking Sexism\, Gender and Sexuality and editor of Teaching about the Wars in the Middle East. \nNick Estes is co-founder of Red Nation and author of Our History is the Future: Standing Rock Versus the Dakota Access Pipeline\, and the Long Tradition of Indigenous Resistance. \n“Determined to Stay” is a must-read book for all ages that stands to fill a critical gap in US standard curricula.\n— Noura Erakat\, author of Justice for Some: Law and the Question of Palestine \nLinking the histories of settler colonialism in Palestine and the US\, Sokolower uses testimonios to humanize the complex and interconnected stories of resistance\, building a platform for solidarity across continents.\n— Anita Fernández\, director\, Xicanx Institute for Teaching and Organizing \nAn urgent book about the impact of Israel’s occupation on Palestinian youth.\n—Kirkus Starred Review \n“What is life like for you?” Jody Sokolower asks the children and young people of the Palestinian village of Silwan. Her extraordinary book tells their stories . . . and she brings the stories home\, documenting the parallel histories in which Israeli efforts to destroy Palestinian lives and seize their land are met with the same generations of resistance as US efforts to eliminate the Indigenous people of this land.\n—Phyllis Bennis\, author of Understanding the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict \nPublisher: Interlink\, co-published with Middle East Children’s Alliance \nOrder your copy directly from MECA’s online store today!

SUMMARY:San Francisco Protest for Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Saturday May 15th in San Francisco \n2pm: PROTEST at 16th & Valencia \nFB event Page – please share! \nAs we approach the anniversary of the Nakba\, the colonization of Palestine and forced expulsion of Palestinians continues. Though this is apparent across Palestine\, it is most clear in the heart of Jerusalem\, Palestine’s capitol: in the village of Sheikh Jarrah\, in Silwan\, in Batan Al Hawa\, where Palestinian families are being threatened with imminent expulsion from their homes by the Israeli regime\, Zionist militias and its colonial settlers. \nIn addition to showing up to the streets to uplift the demands of our families back home\, this year we want to also acknowledge the housing evictions and ongoing gentrification of San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood\, where we are holding our rally this year. The Mission has forever been a pillar for Palestinian migrants and especially among the immigrant and black and latinx communities. A place of robust and rich history\, culture\, and connections\, it does not go unnoticed that black and brown communities and the poor are constantly pushed out of their homes to make way for big profit and expansion. We ask our siblings to join us in the streets as we defend our homeland in Palestine and join together in the streets of San Francisco. \nAs we mark 73 years of Nakba\, we also celebrate 73 years of international resistance and struggle for liberation. \nWe are following Covid precautions with an emphasis on social distancing and masks. Sanitizer and extra masks will be available\, so please come join us and help one another stay safe! \nOrganized by the San Francisco Bay Area Palestine Action Network (AROC\, PYM\, Al-Awda\, USPCN\, GUPS\, JVP\, IJAN\, MECA\, ANSWER\, NorCal Friends of Sabeel\, QUIT\, WWP). Endorsed by the Northern California Islamic Council\, and the ICNA Council for Social Justice.

SUMMARY:Virtual Screening "This is Not a Movie: Robert Fisk and the Politics of Truth"
DESCRIPTION:A special tribute screening to the late Robert Fisk\, hosted by the Middle East Children’s Alliance and the Arab Film & Media Institute. Robert Fisk died on October 30\, 2020\, in Ireland at the age of 74. \nFollowed by a Q & A with filmmaker Yung Chang! \nMore info: This is Not a Movie: Robert Fisk and the Politics of Truth | Arab Cinema ReImagined \n \nNOTE: After this content becomes available January 13th at 5:00 pm PST\, you’ll have 4 days 6 hours to start watching. Once you begin\, you’ll have 24 hours to finish watching the film. The January 13th at 5:00 pm live stream can be viewed anytime until January 17th at 11:45 pm. \n? \nABOUT THE FILM:\nFor more than 40 years\, journalist Robert Fisk has reported on some of the most violent and divisive conflicts in the world. \nYung Chang’s This Is Not a Movie captures Fisk in action—feet on the ground\, notebook in hand\, as he travels into landscapes devastated by war\, ferreting out the facts and firing reports back home to reach an audience of millions. \n“Chang uses Fisk to weave a tale about the nature of modern journalism.”\n–Cineuropa \n“In response to the idea that journalism is or should be ‘objective\,’ Fisk said\, “I always say that reporters should be neutral and unbiased on the side of those who suffer. If you were covering the 18th-century slave trade\, you would not give equal space to the slave-ship captain. … At the Sabra and Shatila massacre in Beirut in 1982\, I did not give equal time to the Israeli army who watched the killings and whose Lebanese allies committed the atrocity.” \n***Apologies\, but this showing is only authorized to be viewed in the USA.*** \n\nFacebook event\nAnd to whet your appetite\, check out this conversation between Robert Fisk and filmmaker Yung Chang\, about the role of journalism\, from the Toronto International Film Festival\, September 2019. \nCosponsored by Norcal Friends of Sabeel and Jewish Voice for Peace- Bay Area

SUMMARY:Webinar: Ilan Pappe & Diana Buttu
DESCRIPTION:What Next for Palestine?\nJoin MECA for this special live webinar!\nSign up now www.mecaforpeace.org/pappe\nBy November 22\, who knows what will be happening in the world — given the US elections\, Covid\, upheaval and uprisings worldwide. Don’t miss this chance to hear from two brilliant and compelling activist/scholars about the effects on Palestine and what we can do. Join us! \n \nILAN PAPPE\, Ph.D.\, directs the European Center of Palestine Studies at the University of Exeter in the U.K. He is an Israeli historian and activist\, the son of German Jewish parents who fled Nazi persecution in the 1930s. Pappe has published 15 books\, including the groundbreaking The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (2006)\, which debunks the myth that the Palestinian population left of their own accord. He documents that part of Israel’s founding ideology was the forcible removal of the indigenous population: between 1947- 1949\, over 400 Palestinian villages were destroyed\, civilians were massacred\, and approximately one million men\, women\, and children were expelled from their homes at gunpoint. Called “Israel’s bravest historian” by journalist John Pilger\, Pappe left Israel in 2008 after finding it it “increasingly difficult” to live there with his “unwelcome views and convictions\,” including his support of economic\, political and academic boycotts of Israel. \nDIANA BUTTU is a Canadian-Palestinian human rights attorney. In 2000\, she moved to the occupied West Bank where she served as a legal advisor to the Palestinian negotiating team and later to the Palestinian president. She was part of the team that assisted in the successful litigation of the Wall before the International Court of Justice. Buttu resigned from her post in 2005 but remains a frequent commentator on Middle East politics and human rights\, with op-eds and appearances in media outlets such as the NYT\, CNN\, BBC\, Aljazeera\, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post. Buttu is the recipient of the Stelle Solidariete Italian prize for her human rights work; she was the Eleanor Roosevelt Fellow at Harvard Law School\, holding an appointment with the Kennedy School and Law School at the same time. In a 2018 opinion piece in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz\, Buttu stated\, “It is repugnant that the world demands that Palestinians negotiate their freedom\, while Israel continues to steal Palestinian land.” \nSpace Limited\, REGISTER NOW! $10 suggested donation\nwww.mecaforpeace.org/pappe \nFacebook event – please share! \nBenefit for Palestine & Lebanon \nCosponsored by Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC)\, NorCal Friends of Sabeel\, Jewish Voice for Peace – Bay Area and more!

SUMMARY:Abolition and Liberation: A conversation with Angela Davis and Jamal Juma'
DESCRIPTION:Register at \nJoin us for an international discussion of the connections between Black Lives Matter calls to defund the police and abolish the prison industrial complex\, and Palestinian calls to tear down all apartheid walls and free Palestine. \nOur speakers bring years of on-the-ground experience and strategic thinking to the conversation. Angela Davis has been an activist and liberatory scholar since the 1960s. Her 2003 book Are Prisons Obsolete? laid the strategic groundwork for the current abolition movement\, as did the first Critical Resistance Conference\, which she co-organized in 1998. \nShe will be joined\, from Palestine\, by Jamal Juma’\, a leading grassroots organizer since Palestine’s First Intifada in 1987. A founding member of the Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committees\, Palestine National BDS Committee\, Palestinian Association for Cultural Exchange\, and Palestinian Environmental NGO Network\, Juma’ is coordinator of the Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign and Stop the Wall. \nKristian Davis Bailey\, who will be moderating their conversation\, is a co-founder of Black for Palestine and a co-author of the 2015 Black Solidarity with Palestine Statement signed by more than 1\,000 Black activists. He was a member of Black Youth. \nThere has never been a more critical time for this thought-provoking and inspiring conversation. Please join us as we sharpen our understanding of these critical issues and build our capacity for effective resistance!

SUMMARY:Free Webinar: Live from Beirut\, Lebanon
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Rania Masri & Dr. Olfat Mahmoud\nThe Explosion\, Pandemic\, & Political/Economic Crisis\nFRIDAY\, AUGUST 21: 11am PT/ 2pm ET\nRegister now: www.mecaforpeace.org/BeirutWebinar \n \nWhat will the future be – for the Lebanese people\, and the Palestinian & Syrian refugees? Hear from these two extraordinary activist / experts and ask your own questions! \nDR. RANIA MASRI is a long-time political activist\, committed to issues of justice in the Arab region. She joined the “Citizens in a State” (mmfidawla.org) political party in 2016 to change the status quo in Lebanon through direct political action\, and to build direct relations between the state and its citizens governed by rights and responsibilities\, rather than by a relationship of clients via sectarian affiliations. \nIn 2017 she was elected President of the party’s Delegate Council. Currently\, Dr. Masri teaches at the Lebanese American University LAU. Her academic publications focus on environmental sustainability and social movements — as well as boycott and liberation for Palestine. She can be reached directly at @rania_masri and at facebook.com/rania.masri. \nDR. OLFAT MAHMOUD is a Palestinian refugee born in Lebanon\, whose life mission is to fulfill the dream of her parents and grandparents: to return to their hometown “Tarshiha” in Palestine. After working as a nurse for the Palestinian Red Crescent Society\, she joined the Faculty of Human Sciences at Beirut Arab University where she studied Psychology and Women’s Studies\, and then earned a PhD in Positive Psychology and Personality. Currently she is both an instructor at Beirut Arab University and the General Director of the Palestinian NGO Woman’s Humanitarian Organization. \nDr. Mahmoud has also published academic studies and is an activist for Palestinian and women’s rights. Her book “Tears for Tarshiha” is her first step on the road to return to her village “Tarshiha”. In 2015\, she was selected to represent the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon at the UN celebration of the foundation of UNRWA in New York. \nSpace limited\, REGISTER NOW!\nwww.mecaforpeace.org/BeirutWebinar\nFacebook event – please share!

SUMMARY:SF\, CA: Cairo Cabaret benefit for MECA
DESCRIPTION:Cairo Cabaret:\nCelebrating Live Arabic Music and Improvisational Dance\nin the Heart of San Francisco\nFacebook event \nMany thanks to the artists for making the December Cairo Cabaret a benefit for MECA! \nImprovisational dance to live Arabic music is an integral part of any Middle Eastern arts and cultures. Unfortunately\, this is a dying art. The mission of Cairo Cabaret is to keep alive and celebrate these unique and vanishing art forms by supporting events that include live Arabic music and improvisational dance\, educating audiences of the beauty of these cultural experiences\, and deepening ones connection with these rare art forms. In a climate of intolerance and division\, Cairo Cabaret shine a light on artists promoting Middle Eastern cultures by showcasing live Arabic music and dance performances. \nCairo Cabaret features dancers who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of Middle Eastern dances and cultures. These dancers are from the Salimpour School of Dance which teaches numerous forms of Middle Eastern dances and emphasizes technique\, musicality\, and a deep cultural study. Arabic music will be performed by the Georges Lammam Ensemble which has long-standing history of performing classical Arabic music in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Middle East. \n

SUMMARY:San Francisco\, CA: Rally for 1st Anniversary of Gaza's Great March of Return
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 30\, 2019 will mark the first anniversary of the Great March of Return in Gaza and the 43rd anniversary of Land Day in Palestine. Since March 30\, 2018\, more than 240 Palestinians have been killed\, thousands wounded by live fire and thousands more by tear gas and other weapons. \nDespite being trapped inside the largest open-air prison in the world and confronting one of world’s most powerful militaries\, the Palestinians in Gaza have continued their heroic resistance.\nThe Trump administration and the Democrat party leaders in Congress have not only supported Israel’s murderous assault\, but also continued to provide the weapons to carry it out. They are seeking to criminalize the Boycott\, Divestment and Sanctions Campaign. \nWe are calling for a march and rally in solidarity with Gaza and the Palestinian struggle as a whole\, March 30\, 2019 . We will be meeting at 24th and Mission Bart station\, then marching through the Mission \nEnd the Blockade – Let Gaza Live!\nStop all U.S. aid to Israel!\nDefend the BDS-Boycott\, Divestment & Sanctions Campaign\nSupport Palestinian self-determination including the right of returnc

SUMMARY:"Naila and the Uprising" film screening in celebration of International Women's Day!
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 14\, 7pm\nBerkeley City College Auditorium\n2050 Center Street\, Berkeley\nnear downtown Berkeley BART\nWhen a nation-wide uprising breaks out in the Occupied Palestinian Territories\, a young woman in Gaza must make a choice between love\, family\, and freedom. Undaunted\, she embraces all three\, joining a clandestine network of women in a movement that forces the world to recognize the Palestinian right to self-determination for the first time. Naila and the Uprising chronicles the journey of Naila Ayesh and a fierce community of women on the front lines\, whose stories weave through the most vibrant\, nonviolent mobilization in Palestinian history – the First Intifada in the late 1980s. \nThis film brings out of anonymity these courageous women activists. Engaged at all levels of society\, we learn what is possible when women take the lead in struggles for rights and justice and what we lose when they are stripped of their roles. We also witness the tremendous power of nonviolent organizing: massive street rallies\, mobile health clinics\, underground schools and concerted boycott campaigns\, sustaining the uprising while generating indigenous self-sufficiency. We see how women-led civil resistance can stir the masses\, put pressure on power-holders\, and affect real structural change. Produced by Just Vision and directed by award-winning filmmaker Julia Bacha. \n“In ‘Naila and the Uprising\,” female activists are not shiny aberrations–they are the unseen spine holding up a movement.” \n— The Daily Beast \nWatch trailer \nA local Palestinian activist panel will speak briefly after the film! \nTICKETS: $15\, $25\, $50\, available through Eventbrite — Benefit for MECA \nFor info: 510-548-0542\, meca@mecaforpeace.org\, www.mecaforpeace.org \nWheelchair Accessible
