SUMMARY:Berkeley\, CA: Direct from Gaza: Mosab Abu Toha
DESCRIPTION:Direct from Gaza: Mosab Abu Toha\nAuthor\, Poet\, and Founder of the Edward Said Library in Gaza Reading from his new book: FOREST of NOISE\nDate: Friday\, 8 November\nTime: 6:30-8:30 pm PST\nLocation: Berkeley City College Auditorium – 2050 Center Street Berkeley\, CA 94704\nJoin MECA in welcoming back Palestinian educator\, author and poet\, Mosab Abu Toha\, as he shares portions of his poignant new release Forest of Noise. The reading will be followed by a book signing with the author. Forest of Noise will be available for purchase at the event and is currently available on ShopPalestine.org. Purchase tickets here. \nAbout the Author\nMOSAB ABU TOHA is a Palestinian poet\, short-story writer\, and essayist from Gaza. His first collection of poetry\, Things You May Find Hidden in My Ear\, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry and won the Palestine Book Award\, the American Book Award\, and the Walcott Poetry Prize. Abu Toha is also the founder of the Edward Said Library in Gaza\, which he hopes to rebuild. He recently won an Overseas Press Club Award for his “Letter from Gaza” columns for The New Yorker. \nAbout Forest of Noise\n“A powerful\, capacious\, and profound” (Ocean Vuong) new collection of poems about life in Gaza by an award-winning Palestinian poet.\nBarely thirty years old\, Mosab Abu Toha was already a well-known poet when the current siege of Gaza began. After the Israeli army bombed and destroyed his house\, pulverizing a library he had painstakingly built for community use\, he and his family fled for their safety. Not for the first time in their lives. \nSomehow\, amid the chaos\, Abu Toha kept writing poems. These are those poems. Uncannily clear\, direct\, and beautifully tuned\, they form one of the most astonishing works of art wrested from wartime. Here are directives for what to do in an air raid; here are lyrics about the poet’s wife\, singing to his children to distract them. Huddled in the dark\, Abu Toha remembers his grandfather’s oranges\, his daughter’s joy in eating them. \nMoving between glimpses of life in relative peacetime and absurdist poems about surviving in a barely livable occupation\, Forest of Noise invites a wide audience into an experience that defies the imagination—even as it is watched live. Abu Toha’s poems introduce readers to his extended family\, some of them no longer with us. This is an urgent\, extraordinary\, and arrestingly whimsical book. Searing and beautiful\, it brings us indelible art in a time of terrible suffering.

SUMMARY:CANCELED Mosab Abu Toha in Santa Rosa\, Berkeley and San Jose
DESCRIPTION:We are very sorry to announce that Mosab Abu Toha will not be able to join us for our events in San Francisco\, Santa Rosa and San Jose due to some serious safety concerns at this time. He wants to come here as soon as circumstances allow it. \nIn the meantime we want to urge you to read his published works\, Forest of Noise and Things You May Find Hidden in My Ear\, both available from shoppalestine.org. \nAbout the Author \nMOSAB ABU TOHA is a Palestinian poet\, short-story writer\, and essayist from Gaza. \nAbout Forest of Noise \n“A powerful\, capacious\, and profound” (Ocean Vuong) new collection of poems about life in Gaza by an award-winning Palestinian poet. \nBarely thirty years old\, Mosab Abu Toha was already a well-known poet when the current siege of Gaza began. \n[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

SUMMARY:Oakland\, CA- Two Years of Genocide: The Legacy of Malcolm X and Black-Palestinian Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:Two Years of Genocide: The Legacy of Malcolm X and Black-Palestinian Solidarity\nDate: Wednesday\, October 1\, 2025\, 6:30pm\nJoin MECA as we welcome Angela Davis\, Ali Abunimah\, and Lara Kiswani in conversation on the two years of ongoing genocide in Gaza. the legacy of Malcolm X\, and Black-Palestinian solidarity. Co-sponsored by IJAN\, NorCal Sabeel\, AROC\, PYM\, and Center for Political Education \nWhile the genocidal assault on Gaza intensifies\, the international Palestinian solidarity movement is gaining strength. A united resistance is the only way forward and can take inspiration from the revolutionary internationalism of Malcolm X. 2025 marks 100 years since his birth. \nMalcolm X’s views on Palestine were shaped by his evolving global perspective and his 1964 visit to the Gaza Strip\, where he witnessed the conditions in Palestinian refugee camps. He drew a direct parallel between the displacement of Palestinians and the oppression of Black people in America\, emphasizing that both were part of a universal struggle for justice and self-determination against a system he saw as a new form of colonialism. \nAngela Y. Davis\, Professor Emerita at UC\, Santa Cruz\, is an activist\, writer\, and lecturer. Her work focuses on prisons\, police\, abolition\, and the related intersections of race\, gender\, and class. \nAli Abunimah is Executive Director of The Electronic Intifada. He is the author of One Country and The Battle for Justice in Palestine. \nLara Kiswaniis the Executive Director of the Arab Resource & Organizing Center (AROC)\, which serves thousands of poor and working-class Arabs and Muslims across the Bay Area. \nHatem Bazian is Founder and Director of the Islamophobia Studies Center\, Co-Founder of Students for Justice in Palestine and American Muslims for Palestine\, and UC Berkeley Faculty.

SUMMARY:Berkeley: Terms of Servitude
DESCRIPTION:Terms of Servitude: Big Tech’s Rise in Silencing Palestinian Voices and Advancing Genocide\nWednesday\, October 15\, 2025\, 6:30 pm\nMiddle East Children’s Alliance\, 1101 8th Street\, Berkeley\, CA 84710\nEvent is free but please RSVP\nJoin MECA in welcoming Omar Zahzah to discuss his new book\, Terms of Servitude: Zionism\, Silicon Valley\, and Digital Settler/Colonialism in the Palestine Liberation Struggle. \nZahzah illustrates how big tech has leveraged massive power to spread propaganda\, silence criticism of Israel\, and smear dissenters. Zahzah calls this “digital settler colonialism” and shows how it operates in both subtle and overt ways—from shadow banning to blacklisting to paid trolling—across platforms. He also profiles the creative Palestinian activists\, artists\, and journalists who are outwitting the seemingly all-powerful tech titans and getting their message out despite the massive forces arrayed against them. \nOMAR ZAHZAH is a writer\, poet\, organizer of Lebanese Palestinian descent\, and Assistant Professor of Arab and Muslim Ethnicities and Diasporas (AMED) Studies at San Francisco State University. Omar has covered digital repression in relation to Palestine as a freelance journalist since May 2021\, with work appearing in such outlets as Al Jazeera\, Middle East Eye\, Electronic Intifada\, Mondoweiss\, CounterPunch.

SUMMARY:Berkeley: Author Talk - Michael J Cooper on Crossroads of Empire
DESCRIPTION:Author Talk: Michael J Cooper on Crossroads of Empire\nDate: April 14\, 2026\nTime: 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm\nLocation: MECA Offices\, 1101 8th Street\, Berkeley CA 94710\nJoin MECA in welcoming author Michael J Cooper as he introduces two of his books of historical fiction which are set in Ottoman Palestine during WW1 and deal with the imperial designs of the Great Powers. Michael will also discuss his experience as a pediatric cardiologist on 26 volunteer medical missions to Palestine over the past twenty years. \nThere will also be refreshments and special musical entertainment from Cormac Gannon and Ibrahim Safi. \nThe presentation will be followed by a Q&A and opportunity to obtain books with donations to MECA: all donations of at least $50 will receive a free copy of either book\, with both books free for a donation of $90 or more. \n100% of monies raised at this event will be donated to MECA to assist in delivering vital aid to children in Palestine. \nPlease note: this event is dedicated to the memory of the founder of MECA\, Barbara Lubin. \nEntry is free\, but because of limited space\, we ask that you RSVP in advance. \n“Wages of Empire is a superb historical novel and a must read! I am a man of Jerusalem and felt goose bumps as Cooper’s prose brought back vivid memories of the city of my birth. Most importantly\, this memorable historical novel directly relates to issues we face today. I’m grateful for Cooper’s genius in invoking a difficult past to heal a broken present.”\n—Rizek Abusharr\, Emeritus Director General of Jerusalem International YMCA\, nominated for Nobel Peace Prize (1993)\, recipient of Marthe Laube Prize for Tolerance and Democratic Values (1996). \n“Crossroads of Empire dives into the tumultuous waters of World War I\, presenting a thrilling narrative enriched by a blend of historical and fictional characters. Cooper’s writing is compelling and richly detailed\, offering a tapestry of scenes that bring early 20th-century conflicts vividly to life.”\n—Literary Titan Review \nCombined synopsis of Wages of Empire & Crossroads of Empire \nIn the summer of 1914\, sixteen-year-old Evan Sinclair leaves home to join the Great War for Civilization. Little does he know that\, despite the war raging in Europe\, the true source of conflict will emerge in Ottoman Palestine\, since it’s from Jerusalem where the German kaiser dreams to rule as Holy Roman Emperor. Filled with such historical figures as Gertrude Bell\, T.E. Lawrence\, Winston Churchill\, Faisal bin Hussein and Chaim Weizmann\, Wages of Empire follows Evan through the killing fields of the Western Front where he will help turn the tide of a war that is just beginning\, and become part of a story that’s still being written. \nThe story of Evan Sinclair that begins in Wages of Empire continues in Crossroads of Empire. Having survived German artillery\, poison gas\, and friendly fire in helping to turn the tide of the war in its first months\, Evan barely survives his hospital ship’s sinking by a German U-boat\, and left with amnesia\, he no longer remembers who he is. During his quest to recover his memory Evan will discover far more: love for his father\, grief for his late mother\, and hidden secrets of his bloodline. \nThe Middle East Front soon explodes with pitched battles at Suez and Gallipoli as the great imperial powers maneuver\, calculate\, and make promises they have no intention of keeping. These machinations are woven into the fabric of both books as the German Empire\, the British Empire\, and France look forward to controlling various portions of the Ottoman Empire\, and particularly the Middle East\, after the war.
