12,000 Palestinian children arrested by Israel since 1967

According to new figures released by the Palestinian Authority's Minister for Prisoner Affairs, Issa Karaka', the Israeli authorities have arrested 12,000 Palestinian children since 1967, 300 of whom are minors that are still held in prisons run by the Israeli Occupation.

Mr Karaka' stated that detained children "were subjected to torture, extortion and unfair judicial procedures during their trials," and revealed that the Occupation is "violating the Convention on the Rights of the Child which stipulates the illegality of the detention of children under the age of 18."

During the opening of the Freedom Camp for Prisoners in the village of Zaytuna situated in the south of the West Bank, Karaka' stated that "Israel's goal behind arresting young boys is the destruction of entire generations, as 90 percent of those children face maltreatment and torture during detention and interrogation."

DCI: A Child Held in Solitary Confinement

On 24 October 2011, a 17-year-old boy from Haris village, in the occupied West Bank, was arrested by Israeli soldiers at 2:00 am and taken to Al Jalame interrogation centre, inside Israel. He was held in solitary confinement for 24 days.

Overcrowded living

When the children return home it is dark and, given the constant power cuts, lack of space, and loud noise from electrical generators the children are unable to study.
