Mona al-Samouni, 12, is depressed and has nightmares about the day - just over a year ago - when she witnessed her parents and a number of relatives being shot by Israeli soldiers in their home in Zeitoun, southeast of Gaza City.

Howard Zinn was an activist, a teacher, a filmmaker, a writer, a man with a great sense of humor but most of all Howard made all of us think. He made us see that through understanding the history of slavery, poverty, and the struggle for civil rights in this country, we were better equipped to stand up and fight for justice here at home and in the rest of the world. Howard Zinn made us all better people and we will miss him terribly.

Howard Zinn taught millions of us a simple lesson: Agitate. Agitate. Agitate. But never lose your sense of humor in the process. It's a beautiful legacy and however much it hurts to lose him, we should strive to build on Howard's work and go out and make some history.
